The right mask comes down to how you breathe, how you sleep, and what pressure your therapy requires. Four factors do most of the work.
How You Breathe
Nose breathers do well with nasal or pillow masks. If you breathe through your mouth at night, sleep with your mouth open, or have chronic congestion, a full face mask will keep your therapy effective. A chin strap can sometimes convert a mouth breather to a nasal mask, but a full face mask is usually simpler.
Your Sleep Position
Side and stomach sleepers benefit from the low profile of a pillow mask or a minimal-contact nasal mask, which are less likely to shift or leak against a pillow. Back sleepers have the most flexibility and can wear any style comfortably, including larger full face options.
Your Pressure Setting
Higher pressures (generally above 15 cm H₂O) are easier to tolerate with a full face mask, which distributes air across a larger surface area. Lower and mid-range pressures work well across all three mask styles, so the choice becomes one of comfort and breathing style rather than pressure.
Facial Features & Comfort
Beards and mustaches can interfere with a full face or nasal mask seal; pillow masks often work better. If you wear glasses in bed or feel claustrophobic, a pillow mask keeps your line of sight and face clear. Skin sensitivity and pressure points can usually be solved with different cushion sizes or fabric mask frames.

Frequently Asked Questions
CPAP Mask FAQ
What's the difference between full face, nasal, and pillow masks?
Full face masks cover both the nose and mouth, which makes them the right choice for mouth breathers and higher pressure settings. Nasal masks cover only the nose with a cushion seal and suit most nose breathers. Nasal pillow masks use small silicone inserts at the nostrils for the most minimal fit, ideal for side sleepers or anyone who feels claustrophobic in larger masks.
Which CPAP mask is best for side sleepers?
Side sleepers do best with nasal pillow masks or low-profile nasal masks. Both styles have minimal contact with the pillow, which reduces the chance of the mask shifting or leaking when you change position. Larger full face masks can work for side sleepers, but you may need to experiment with pillow position or switch to a CPAP-specific pillow with cutouts.
Do I need a prescription for a CPAP mask in Canada?
CPAP masks themselves do not require a prescription in Canada. You can purchase any mask on CPAPSupply.ca without providing a prescription. CPAP machines, however, do require a valid prescription from a licensed physician or nurse practitioner, and we verify this before shipping any machine.
How often should I replace my CPAP mask?
Most CPAP mask cushions should be replaced every 1 to 3 months, and the full mask frame and headgear every 6 to 12 months. Silicone breaks down with exposure to skin oils and nightly use, which affects both comfort and seal quality. Watch for leaks, skin irritation, or a cushion that feels softer or tackier than when it was new as signs it's time to replace.
Do you offer a mask satisfaction guarantee?
Yes. We offer a 20 days mask fit exchange guarantee on mask purchases. If you're not getting the fit you need, contact our team and we'll help you find one that works.
