What Is an APAP Machine?
An APAP machine, short for automatic positive airway pressure, changes the air pressure through the night instead of holding one fixed level. When your airway stays open, it can deliver less pressure. When it senses a blockage, it raises the pressure, within the range on your prescription. Many people find that more comfortable than one fixed pressure all night. Your sleep specialist decides whether an APAP machine is right for you.
APAP machines are appropriate for most people with obstructive sleep apnea. They are prescribed by Canadian physicians and sleep specialists as a first-line treatment and are covered under many provincial funding programs, including the Ontario Assistive Devices Program (ADP). If you are unsure whether an APAP machine is right for your prescription, our team is available seven days a week to help.
APAP vs CPAP vs BiPAP: What Is the Difference?
The three most common types of PAP therapy devices differ in how they deliver pressure. A standard CPAP machine delivers one fixed pressure all night, set by your sleep specialist based on your sleep study results. An APAP machine delivers a variable pressure that adjusts automatically within a prescribed range, making it more responsive to changes in your breathing throughout the night. A BiPAP machine delivers two separate pressures, one for inhalation and a lower one for exhalation, and is typically prescribed for patients with more complex breathing conditions or those who struggle to exhale against constant pressure. For most people newly diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, an APAP machine offers the best combination of effective treatment and night-to-night comfort.
APAP Machines We Carry
The machines in stock are listed above. These are the home APAP machines most people order:
The ResMed AirSense 11 AutoSet is the APAP we sell most often. It adjusts pressure through the night, has a built-in humidifier, and connects to the myAir app. This listing is the machine on its own. If you also need a mask, see the AirSense 11 package.
The ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet is the earlier model. It also adjusts pressure automatically and includes a humidifier. It uses a dial rather than a touchscreen.
The Philips Respironics DreamStation 2 Auto adjusts pressure within your prescribed range and includes a humidifier and a cell modem.
The Löwenstein prismaSMART Max is another home APAP we stock, with a humidifier.
The home machines above include a humidifier. The Transcend Micro 510, also listed in this category, is a travel machine and uses a different setup. Any of them can be paired with the CPAP masks and supplies we stock. Masks do not need a prescription.
Frequently Asked Questions About APAP Machines in Canada
Do I need a prescription for an APAP machine in Canada?
Yes. APAP machines are regulated medical devices in Canada and require a valid prescription from a licensed physician or sleep specialist. Your prescription will specify a minimum and maximum pressure range, which your APAP machine will operate within automatically. CPAPSupply.ca is an authorized Canadian retailer and we verify prescriptions before shipping all CPAP and APAP devices.
Which APAP machines can I buy here?
The home APAP machines we stock are the ResMed AirSense 11 AutoSet, the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet, the Philips Respironics DreamStation 2, and the Löwenstein prismaSMART Max. A prescription is required. Log in to see member prices.
How does an APAP machine differ from a CPAP machine?
A CPAP machine delivers one fixed air pressure all night. An APAP machine automatically adjusts pressure within a prescribed range based on your breathing patterns during sleep. For most patients with obstructive sleep apnea, APAP therapy is equally effective as fixed-pressure CPAP and is often more comfortable because it does not deliver more pressure than needed at any given moment.
Is an APAP machine covered by insurance in Canada?
APAP machines are eligible for coverage under several provincial programs. Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program (ADP) covers a portion of the cost for eligible patients. Many extended health benefits plans also cover CPAP and APAP equipment. Coverage amounts and eligibility requirements vary by province and plan. Visit our CPAP insurance coverage guide or use our insurance quote form to find out what you may be eligible for.
What APAP pressure settings do I need?
Your APAP pressure settings are determined by your sleep study results and prescribed by your physician or sleep specialist. A typical APAP prescription specifies a minimum pressure (often 4 to 6 cm H2O) and a maximum pressure (often 15 to 20 cm H2O). The machine automatically adjusts within that range each night. You should never change your pressure settings without guidance from your prescribing physician.
How do I clean my APAP machine?
Your APAP machine’s humidifier chamber and water tub should be rinsed daily and washed with warm soapy water weekly. The air filter should be checked weekly and replaced according to the manufacturer’s schedule, typically every one to three months for disposable filters. You can clean the outside of the machine by wiping it with a damp cloth. Never submerge the machine itself in water. Visit our CPAP cleaning supplies page for recommended products.
Can I travel with my APAP machine?
Most home APAP machines we carry use a power supply that works on Canadian and US outlets. Check with your airline before you fly, and bring a copy of your prescription. For a smaller bag, see our travel CPAP machines, including the ResMed AirMini.
